An in depth look at Sabé's battle decoy costume from Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, worn by Keira Knightley.
The Croissant of Coruscant*
Sabé was a handmaiden in the service of Padmé Amidala, Queen of Naboo. Amidala’s head of security, Captain Panaka, handpicked Sabé and the other handmaidens following the queen’s coronation and had them trained in gymnastics, hand-to-hand combat and small arms handling. Despite their ability to serve as bodyguards, the handmaidens would also serve Amidala on a more personal level, tending to her outfits and hairstyles.
Sabé, who bore a striking resemblance to Amidala, would adopt the role of the queen, while Amidala herself would pose as a handmaiden. The pair developed a set of signals they would use, while in disguise, to convey messages without arousing suspicion. Due to her role as Amidala's decoy, Sabé was considered to be the most important of the queen's bodyguards. From wookiepedia *I know Sabé is from Naboo (it's a joke) |
About the Original Costume
There is little to no information about this costume available and if there is, I have yet to find it. The information that I have been able to gather is as follows:
The battle dress took one costume designer over a month to finish. Silkworm pods from India were obtained and then woven into a silk net. The pods were then removed from the top of the costume, only to be stitched back on individually to get the desired shoulder shape. (From SWFFAQ) Original concept art

Welcome to my Sabé obsession...
After spending (way too much) time scouring the internet for Sabé content and coming up essentially empty handed, I've decided to collect all the material I was able to come across in one convienient spot for the next sorry soul who attempts to build this insane costume.
This build and information is done following the standards of the Rebel Legion. Fair warning, this website is an outline of how I personally made my costume and is in no way reflective of how the actual costume was created. Feel free to contact me with any questions! |
